Salzburg, Austria

January 2-4, 2016

The birthplace of Mozart. The entire historic city center was declared a World Heritage Site in 1996. Salzburg was ruled by the Archbishop for much of its history who was the ecclesiastical and secular ruler. With money from near by salt mines lots of beautiful churches and a hill top castle were built. The vast incomes from salt is where the name of the city originates. The first day we were able to see the main sights. This included the Salzburg Cathedral, Salzburg Residenz, Mirabell Palace with gardens, Mozart's birthplace, and St. Peter's Abbey. I enjoyed the Hohensalzburg Castle with the funicular carriage that went up the side of the cliff. It was incredibly foggy so we couldn't see anything of the valley from the tower. It snowed the second day in Salzburg. We spent the day in a really fantastic children's museum of toys and another about natural history. Owen loved the slide between floors and the kitchen exhibit. The natural history museum included hands-on exhibits throughout. One of them showed how sunlight takes 8 minutes to reach the earth from the sun. another showed how the different flow rates of water move different size objects. The digestive exhibit was also fascinating. You would feed the guy and then follow the food through his digestive system, including him grunting at the final event.
