El Torcal de Antequera is a nature reserve in the Sierra del Torcal mountain range located south of the city of Antequera. From the visitor center you can see Malaga and the ocean. It is considered one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Europe. The limestone rock was originally laid down in the Jurassic age about 150 million years ago. Then a combination of uplifting, fractures and right-angle faults gives us the strange-looking mountain range in the middle of an otherwise flat landscape. My favorite is the "Tornillo" rock formation that looks like a stack of pancakes. We went on a hike around the area that was very pretty, but difficult with going around all the rocks. It would have been very unpleasant and slippery if the soil was wet. We were able to see a Spanish Ibex Andalusian mountain goat. I think Owen felt a connection with another creature that feels the need to get on top of any surface. It was a fun day and nice hike.

Madrid, Spain - Rock and Roll Marathon
April 22 - 24, 2016
Damon had scheduled running the Rock and Roll Marathon for Madrid a long time. Unfortunately, it was three days after Owen and I returned from our epic adventure back from the US. We were still jet lagged to say the least. No surprise Owen's first night in the hotel was horrible. We had him strapped into the car seat in order to get some respite. This was the night before the race, and thankfully Damon felt pretty good for his run. The day of the race was beautiful. Damon ran very well and his final time was 3:14:53 which is a 7:26 minute mile average. While Damon was running Owen was a hell beast but then when I strapped him in the car seat to take a shower he fell asleep and then stayed so for 2 hours until Damon got back. Then we went out to see more of the city. Our hotel was just a 5 minute walk to the start line of the race and also to the main park. I tried to get Damon to sport around wearing his medal, but no dice. On our walk over to the park we passed the Spanish Congress building and also the Puerta de Alcalá. This is a Neo-classical monument in the Plaza de la Independencia. Then we went to the Parque del Buen Retiro which loosely translates to "park of the pleasant retreat", almost as clever of a name as Central Park in New York City. Owen loved the park and running around in the grass and jumping in muddy puddles. The park was created by the Spanish Monarchy and then turned into a public park in the 19th century. We saw the Monument to Alfonso XII on the edge of the lake with nasty looking water and also the Crystal Palace. Despite being tired and having a long drive up to the city it turned out to be a nice weekend.

Seville, Spain - Bullfight April 17
April 17, 2016
On 17APR2016 I went to Sevilla to see six Miura bulls. This was the first time I have seen Miura bulls which is a big deal. Hemingway claimed in page 195 of “The Dangerous Summer” that Miura bulls were the biggest and best bulls in the world. They come from the Madrid area so it is a real treat that they brought some such a distance. They wear a green and red divisa and have a lineage directly to 1849.
Rafaelillo receive the 1st (560 kg) and 3rd bulls (585kg.) He did not do his own banderilla work and did not receive his first bull on knees (cortigaolla) for the first bull. His second bull he received on knees and did his own banderillas. When you do your own banderillas you always get music the 2nd act. He took two escopardas to kill the first bull and one to kill the second. His second bull was interrupted by a guy jumping into the arena. The Guardia Civil had this guy in a chokehold in no time. He got one ovation and the only ear for the night.
Javier Castano received the 2nd (606kg!) and 4th bulls (592 kg). His first bull was a two try kill. He did not do his own banderillas. The work got no music. The bull seemed coja, or lame, after the first act. He got a silencio. His second bull had the second jumper of the evening. This guy did not make it into the arena before the guards got him. He did not do his own banderillas and the second bull was a one sword kill with an ovation. Castano had shaved his head on this fight and his introduction received a special applause. Maybe he has medical problems?
Manuel Escribano received the 3rd (585 kg) and 6th bulls (639 kg!.) He is from Sevilla and had a very vocal fan sitting next to me. He received both bulls on his knees. His first bull got music for the second act as he did his own banderillas. He got no music for the 3rd act and earned an ovation. For the final bull of the night he again received it on his knees (remember 639 kg monster) and did his own banderillas. Unfortunately it took 3 escopardas, a descaballo, and a knife to the spinal cord to bring this bull down. He received a silencio.
I sat next to a local who spoke English. He informed me that Sevilla has only pardoned three bulls in its history. Sevilla is hard for the bullfighter and bulls! It was a great night with great bulls.

Seville, Spain - Bullfight April 16
April 16, 2016
On 16APR16 I had the opportunity to visit La Maestranza in Sevilla to see Finito de Cordoba, Juan Jose Padilla “The Pirate”, and David Fandila “El Fandi” take on six Ymbro bulls. It is Feria in Sevilla and fights have been occurring nearly every day in April. I was on duty last week and could not attend any fights last week. Now that I am off duty I planned on going to the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday fights. I drove the roughly 2 hrs. to Sevilla on Friday and they were sold out! This had never occurred to me before. I have not been able to figure out how to purchase tickets on line without a physical Spanish mailing address. American mailing address (a.k.a. the base) do not work. You can use hotel addresses but I am not a typical tourist, I stay in an apartment and not a hotel. They did have tickets for Saturday and Sunday so I got $35 euro sol tendido seats. I got my tickets and drove the 2 hours back home. Not a waste through because the Spanish countryside is beautiful in spring. The grain is already ripening and they haven’t even started planting in Star Valley.
Saturday was a rainy day. I got to Sevilla at 1745 for the 1830 fight. Thankfully Allison has an umbrella in the car. Lots of ladies in beautiful Ferria dresses were hiding in the halls protecting their dresses from the down pour. They had put a tarp on the ring to keep the sand from turning into mud. They removed the tarp which was heavy and took a lot of work. This is my first photo. My next photo is spectators in the rain. My third photo is the workers moving wheel barrows of sand and spreading it out to cover muddy areas. I had not seen this before. The rain did stop and it was a nice evening. The first fights were affected by the rain. For example, the bulls would slide after passes.
Finito de Cordoba is the senior bullfighter by age and is from Barcelona. His first bull was a 545 kg brown bull. No music was played for his veronica or muelta work but it was enjoyable. The bull did take the muleta at one point. His first escoparda hit a bone. His second escoparda was true and probably went through the aorta. The bull was dead in less than 30 seconds and blood was coming from the mouth. I have three photos of this. Finito’s second bull was 532 kg. In both fights Finito’s caudrilla did his banderilla work. He got no music in either fight. His picador did drop a vara in the 1st act. His second bull’s escarpada was another deep and true thrust and the bull was down in less than a minute. Finito was probably the most proficient, clean killer of the night but he earned two silencios.
The Pirate took the night. What a showman! His first bull was 541 kg and a difficult distracted bull. He would do everything perfect and the bull would wonder off. Padilla in his great showmanship converted this to crowd support. Padilla took his 1st and 2nd bull from the gate on his knees. He also did muleta work on his knees. A very brave thing to do in my opinion and loved by the crowd. I have photos of this. Padilla, like Fandi but unlike Finito, did his own banderillas. He got music for his 2nd and 3rd acts. He dropped his bull with one true escoparda. The Pirates second bull was 565 kg and a better bull than his first. He got 5 ole’s with his veronica. During his muleta work he turned around and around with the bull touching the bulls rump. They were dancing. He earned two ears from a tough judge for his excellent work and this allowed him to be the only matador of the night to be carried on shoulders through the main gate.
El Fandi’s first bull was 532 kg. He did not take his first bull on his knees and I can only guess this is why he got a silencio. His fight sequence was very good in my opinion. He got music in the 2nd and 3rd acts. He did his own banderillas, 6 true banderillas on the bull’s right. He did get on his knees with the veronica. He killed the bull clean with one escoparda. Fandi’s second bull was a 540 kg bull which he took on his knees from the gate. Again, music second and third act and he placed his own banderillas with a unique four true strikes and 7 flags in. He copied the Pirates well received knee trick, but maybe did it better. He literally was on his knees crawling probably 30 yards getting pass after pass without getting up. He killed the bull with one clean escoparda. El Fandi has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best bullfighters in the world. Maybe expectations were too high because he had a great night but only earned one ear on the second bull.

Month 21
This month's excitement was going back on a big adventure back to Maryland and Wyoming. Owen's new word is wow. He loves putting things 'away' and climbing up on to anything. He still loves the iPad but his new show that he likes is Peppa Pig. We had found the books out in Rota at the bookstore with English and Spanish text. Damon likes to read them to Owen during bath time. I am not quite sure how I thought to do this, but I looked up Peppa Pig on Amazon and found that there is also a TV show! The cute little oinking and giggling is adorable. Bananas, avocado, blueberries, pasta, and any cheese are among Owen's favorite foods. In the realm of speech development, he is still doing more screaming that talking. However, he is really good at taking your hand (or anybody's hand) and guiding them to the thing that he wants. He is happy, loving, and healthy.
Owen's mornings......
