On 17APR2016 I went to Sevilla to see six Miura bulls. This was the first time I have seen Miura bulls which is a big deal. Hemingway claimed in page 195 of “The Dangerous Summer” that Miura bulls were the biggest and best bulls in the world. They come from the Madrid area so it is a real treat that they brought some such a distance. They wear a green and red divisa and have a lineage directly to 1849.
Rafaelillo receive the 1st (560 kg) and 3rd bulls (585kg.) He did not do his own banderilla work and did not receive his first bull on knees (cortigaolla) for the first bull. His second bull he received on knees and did his own banderillas. When you do your own banderillas you always get music the 2nd act. He took two escopardas to kill the first bull and one to kill the second. His second bull was interrupted by a guy jumping into the arena. The Guardia Civil had this guy in a chokehold in no time. He got one ovation and the only ear for the night.
Javier Castano received the 2nd (606kg!) and 4th bulls (592 kg). His first bull was a two try kill. He did not do his own banderillas. The work got no music. The bull seemed coja, or lame, after the first act. He got a silencio. His second bull had the second jumper of the evening. This guy did not make it into the arena before the guards got him. He did not do his own banderillas and the second bull was a one sword kill with an ovation. Castano had shaved his head on this fight and his introduction received a special applause. Maybe he has medical problems?
Manuel Escribano received the 3rd (585 kg) and 6th bulls (639 kg!.) He is from Sevilla and had a very vocal fan sitting next to me. He received both bulls on his knees. His first bull got music for the second act as he did his own banderillas. He got no music for the 3rd act and earned an ovation. For the final bull of the night he again received it on his knees (remember 639 kg monster) and did his own banderillas. Unfortunately it took 3 escopardas, a descaballo, and a knife to the spinal cord to bring this bull down. He received a silencio.
I sat next to a local who spoke English. He informed me that Sevilla has only pardoned three bulls in its history. Sevilla is hard for the bullfighter and bulls! It was a great night with great bulls.
