Madrid, Spain - Rock and Roll Marathon

April 22 - 24, 2016

Damon had scheduled running the Rock and Roll Marathon for Madrid a long time.  Unfortunately, it was three days after Owen and I returned from our epic adventure back from the US.  We were still jet lagged to say the least.  No surprise Owen's first night in the hotel was horrible.  We had him strapped into the car seat in order to get some respite.  This was the night before the race, and thankfully Damon felt pretty good for his run.  The day of the race was beautiful. Damon ran very well and his final time was 3:14:53 which is a 7:26 minute mile average.  While Damon was running Owen was a hell beast but then when I strapped him in the car seat to take a shower he fell asleep and then stayed so for 2 hours until Damon got back.  Then we went out to see more of the city.  Our hotel was just a 5 minute walk to the start line of the race and also to the main park.  I tried to get Damon to sport around wearing his medal, but no dice. On our walk over to the park we passed the Spanish Congress building and also the Puerta de Alcalá. This is a Neo-classical monument in the Plaza de la Independencia.  Then we went to the Parque del Buen Retiro which loosely translates to "park of the pleasant retreat", almost as clever of a name as Central Park in New York City. Owen loved the park and running around in the grass and jumping in muddy puddles. The park was created by the Spanish Monarchy and then turned into a public park in the 19th century.  We saw the Monument to Alfonso XII on the edge of the lake with nasty looking water and also the Crystal Palace.  Despite being tired and having a long drive up to the city it turned out to be a nice weekend.
