We took a ferry to go see Old Baldy lighthouse on Bald Head Island. This is the entrance to one of North Carolina's capes, Cape Fear. Old Baldy was built in 1817 and is the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. It is the second of three lighthouses that have been built on Bald Head Island since the 19th century to help guide ships past the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the Cape Fear river. Sir Richard Grenville likely named the cape on his expedition through the area in 1585 before establishing the colony at Roanoke Island. In 1996, Hurricane Fran came through Bald Head Island. The residents on the island took shelter inside the lighthouse with the construction of brick and plaster being five feet thick and has weathered many storms before and since. The kids loved riding the ferry and it was a cute island to go around for an outing. On the ferry ride we could see the remnants of Price's Creek Lighthouse and also a dredging operation of some sort with several tug boats.
