Tallinn, Estonia

September 8, 2015

This city is the capital of Estonia. It is not a very large city with only a population of 400,000 which is 32% of the whole country’s population. Their main museum is of the Estonian maritime history. It has sea planes which were mainly used for local trade and transport. The museum also has a submarine, a 16th century Maasilinn shipwreck and the 1914 Suur Toll ice breaker. The Lembit submarine was constructed in 1937 and was the world’s oldest submarine still afloat until 2011. In the main part of the town is the Nevsky Cathedral. Which is Russian Orthodox. In the lower town we saw several homes from medieval merchants that all had enormous fireplaces with small doors. All the downspouts were huge with little wires for melting ice. We also saw a pharmacy that was founded in the 15th century. Estonia did not have a very positive experience its Russian rule and claims their independence as a very joyous day. We enjoyed Tallinn's medieval feel and friendly people.  Although one wouldn't ever say that the people were total jerks.
