Laguna de Medina, Spain

May 26, 2014

This is a large lagoon designated a natural preserve in 1987.  It is fed by rainwater from the surrounding hills and the Fuente Bermeja stream.  The lake is the largest in the province of Cadiz and the second largest in Andalusia.  The deepest section is only 2 meters deep and it can dry out during the dry summer months.  I don't claim to be a birder, but I do love hearing that endangered species have places to go.  The white-headed duck and red-knobbed coot are two of the endangered species of bird that migrate through this lagoon.  Other birds that stop here include garganeys, geese, pochards, ducks, and flamingos.  The surrounding wetland is excellent for winter habitat and nesting.  The wetland also has lots of pretty flowers and weird-looking bugs. Surrounding the preserve is agriculture that looks like olives and wheat.  Also nearby is what we guessed to be a gravel processing mine of some sort that one of the storage silos looks like the Death Star from Star Wars.  This was a fun trip just 30 minutes from Rota.

I fell behind pretty fast, that is a long walk for a preggo lady!

HUGE thistle.  Damon kept telling me to step closer and closer.....

A weird bug - it was about two inches long!
