Jerez, Spain - Feria

May 7, 2016

The Jerez Feria began as a horse fair over 500 years ago.  The ferias were all started for commercial livestock trade but then in typical Spanish style, it became a party. The Jerez feria grounds cover 13 acres.  The main section of the feria is several avenues of casetas with horse carriage rides going throughout the whole area.  Casetas are pretty much little tapa restaurants with dance floors. Then there is a separate area for all the carnival games and rides. Owen and Damon went on a cute ride riding on a four-wheeler. We had a lovely lunch at one of the casetas and one couple was dancing along with the flamenco music being played.  Owen loved the horse carriage ride and in general being able to run around.  I loved taking stalker-like pictures of the almost ridiculous feria dresses.

Damon was able to go to a bullfight in Jerez with the feria.  For each area, the bullfight season begins at feria.  The most spectacular ones being during the feria week.  The unique feature of this fight was that the bullfighters were on horseback instead of on foot.
