Mykonos, Greece

November 11, 2015

Mykonos is a beautiful island. There are 600 "churches" on the island with 60 being in the city of Mykonos. Their definition of church includes the family sarcophagus. With the island so rocky, they have to put their dead into these mini churches. After three years of being buried, the bones are dug up, washed, and then taken to the family church. Another interesting part of these churches is that many are right next to night clubs. It is a barren and dry piece of granite stuck in the Aegean Sea. People scraped a living by growing wheat and milling it with wind powered mills. The island has a steady northern wind to power the wind mills and keep the water clear and cold. Their main income now is tourism. The population goes from 8,000 permanent residents up to 120,000 during August. Piracy was the next most common profession of the island. The streets are narrow and twisted to hide from pirates. This island is an easy stop for cruise ships and an easy ferry ride from Athens. Our tour guide told us that we are the last cruise ship of the season.
