The zoo in Castellar de la Frontera was originally a private animal rescue center opened in 1998. The animals were seized by authorities due to being in the black market or other illegal areas. In 2002 it was opened to the public to raise awareness for the animals. The money raised is used to take care of the animals and the facilities. The zoo is very nice and has open cages so that you can get fairly close to the animals. There is a little runway through the zoo that the smaller monkeys can go through. It is just outside the new Castellar that was built in the 1960s 7 km from the original mountaintop fortress. The streets were all very wide and in a grid pattern. I felt like I was a bit back in the Us because there were speed bumps everywhere! The animals varied from an albino tiger to black pigs. Owen was distracted by Damon's baseball hat to pay attention to the pigs he usually loves seeing.
