Conil de la Frontera, Spain

May 9, 2015

Conil de la Frontera is just an hour from Rota to the south.  It is part of the Costa de la Luz or “Coast of Light” that extends from the mouth of the Guadiana River which is the Portugal-Spain border to the southern-most point of the Iberian Peninsula in Tarifa. Rota is also part of the Costa de la Luz. The Mediterranean coast of Southern Spain is called the Costa del Sol or “Coast of Sun”. All of these areas have beautiful beaches and are popular tourist destinations in the summer months. More recently, the Costa de la Luz has become popular for French and German visitors.  Conil de la Frontera has six beaches it claims of its own.  I find this strange as there is typically no border whatsoever between the beaches so why bother naming them all. Almadraba tuna is a big deal in Conil and it is even part of the coat of arms and flag. The beaches of Conil are stunningly wide with very minimal slope and very soft sand. We visited the Playa de los Bateles where the Río Salado meets the sea.  It was a lot of fun for Owen to play in the crystal clear water and soft sand.
